Samsung Global Blogger
Sorry for the slow blogging week! I’ve had a few interesting projects going on AND it was my birthday last weekend so as you can imagine I’ve been a little busy.
First things first (I’ll tell you about my birthday trip later), I came across a really exciting opportunity about a week ago; a competition to become a blogger at the London Olympics. Samsung is bringing a number of people from all over the world to explore the streets of London during the games in search of stories that capture the atmosphere of London 2012. To enter we had to make a 30 second audition video. Naturally, with my tendency to over-complicate the simplest of concepts, dozens of convoluted ideas flew through my head: using the Olympic rings for 5 reasons I should win, then linking up those colours to the lines of the London Underground; catching a train to London to shoot my audition; including photos of me as an adorable child at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. My 30 second video had suddenly become the storyboard of a feature-length film.
Hidden Treasures of Lymington
Since my trip to Lymington last week I realised I forgot to tell you about one of the fun places I discovered in the town! We went into Stephen Lees’ Contemporary Art shop/gallery because one of my cousins loves his work, and so did I from the second we walked in. For starters, a lot of his paintings are of the beach and seascapes, my favourite scenes (as some of you may have guessed from my photos). He uses a technique that, although not unique, isn’t one that I’ve seen before – palette knife application of acrylic on canvas, creating a glossy finish. But not only that, despite obviously being very modern with sharp lines and slightly abstract portrayals of real scenes, Lees’ art still manages to retain a strong link to realistic landscapes. And most importantly, it’s pretty. Some pieces are incredibly vibrant and colourful but simplistic enough not to be overpowering while others are neutral and would sit perfectly in a contemporary home.
This provides a perfect segue into my next point, should anyone wish to offer me one (or two, or three…) paintings as a gift I would graciously accept… No but really, I’d love to have a couple of these pieces in my presently not existent house.
For those of you who are really keen on art, you can watch Stephen in his workshop at the back of the gallery but I’m not sure how to tell if he’ll be there at any particular time.
The other wonder of Lymington is Birdy, a (very) young, female musician. I’m a little slow to catch on; she did release her album last year, has had over 20 million views on the video above (a cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love) on youtube and her songs have already been used on TV shows. So what if it did take me a little while to find out about Birdy, the important thing is that a couple of her songs have been in my head all week and I think they’re fantastic.
Have a listen and enjoy local British artists :)

One Lovely Blog Award + 7 Things You Didn’t Know About Me
A few weeks ago I was nominated for a One Lovely Blog Award by one of my readers. A giant thank you to Sheila, I appreciate all your encouraging comments :)
The normal rules of the award are that you give 7 interesting facts about yourself and then pass the award on to 7 blogs that you love. Actually I’ve seen a hundred different versions of the rules, but they’re the ones I liked best. So first off here are 7 things you may not know about me:
- I have a pair of pointe (ballet) shoes in my wardrobe back home that I dance around in just for fun;
- I always eat breakfast;
- I find confrontation and heated debates exhilarating;
- I am great at cooking lamb, but not much else;
- I genuinely enjoy the corporate environment, rushing about amongst Sydney commuter foot-traffic actually makes me smile;
- I haven’t ever seen Lord of the Rings or the Matrix;
- If I could choose any superpower it’d be the ability to fly, but since that isn’t going to happen I just enjoy aeroplane turbulence.
And now the fun part, 7 of my favourite blogs:
- House in Tillford (my favourite travel buddy)
- A Man I Am in Amsterdam (the badge probably isn’t quite to your taste, Bob, but your blog deserves a mention anyway)
- Oribia & the Frogs (your posts always make me laugh, without fail)
- Lost in Translation (can’t wait to see you reach country #100)
- Whimsical Wanderlust (your blog makes me miss France like crazy)
- Travel with Laughter (beautiful photos and outlook on travelling)
- What’s My Label (cutting edge Australian fashion blog)
Your turn now, spill your 7 secrets and pass it on :)

Lovely, little Lymington
I believe I’ve mentioned before, or at least thought of mentioning, that I consider myself lucky to be able to visit the lesser known villages of England. I know I’m not exactly going off the beaten track, so to speak, but staying with family does make it easy to pop out for the day to wander around quaint little corners that many of you won’t have had the opportunity to see. The latest trip was to Lymington (a name that invariably makes me think of lamingtons) on the south coast, the port from which ferries to the Isle of White leave. It’s a pretty town with a definite air of affluence, which, when you consider the fact that celebrities like Johnny Depp have property in the area, is hardly surprising. My aunt told me the pasties from the Cornish Pasty Company were delicious so of course we had to stop off and get one for lunch; some of you will be shocked to hear it this was actually the first one I’ve tried! I had cheese, tomato and basil (probably not healthkick friendly but shhh) but I think my favourite part was the pastry… For those of you who saw my tweet asking why the crusts are so thick, the answer is that originally pasties were made for the tin miners so, to prevent dirt and rubbish getting into the food, the crust was used as something to hold onto and discard. I’m pretty sure the reason they still make them that way is that it’s delicious.

Lanza Video Project
Music: Lucenzo ft Don Omar – Danza Kuduro (aka the song I had stuck in my head the entire trip but didn’t know the name of because I can’t understand the Spanish lyrics)
